Belgium – The red Devils

By on May 12, 2018 in World cup teams

Ranking 5th on Fifa’s Ranking the Belgium team may be the bitter surprise for the rest of the national teams. Worldwide pundits start giving some credit to the Belgium squad a few years ago, but so far they failed to prove their dominance on a top competition field.

Their best performance on the world cup competition was the 4th place and that was more than 30 years ago.

Qualification was smooth – Belgium finished top of Group H, winning nine games and drawing one – and Roberto Martinez’s men have a relatively straightforward group, featuring Panama, Tunisia and, of course, England…

First game: Belgium vs Panama (18/06).

Star: Kevin De Bruyne

There are some genuinely world-class players in Belgium’s pool of talent, and Kevin De Bruyne heads the list. The Manchester City man has developed into a truly brilliant central midfielder under Pep Guardiola’s management, and will be central to any hopes Belgium may have of winning the World Cup. He actually claimed to at least be considered in the golden ball award. Ambitious…hein ?

Elsewhere, Eden Hazard has endured a difficult season at club level, with Chelsea appearing likely to miss out on a top-four finish, but his dribbling ability is unmatched in England, and he can kill teams with one slaloming run. Speedy, skilful and a master at both creating and scoring goals, Hazard is one of the most exciting forwards in world football. The Chelsea star served up six goals and five assists during Belgium’s impressive
qualifying campaign.

Coach: Roberto Martinez
The former Everton and Swansea coach was a somewhat surprising candidate to replace Marc Wilmots in 2016, having coached solely at club level in England, but the Spaniard guided an unbeaten Belgium side to the finals. Russia 2018 will represent Martinez’s first appearance at a FIFA

Group: Belgium, Tunisia, England and Panama

Iceland – Euro 2016 Cinderella

By on May 10, 2018 in World cup teams

Ice…Land – The Euro 2016 Cinderella returns to the big stages.

What heroes Iceland were: brave, organised, superb. They have established themselves as the greatest story of Euro 2016 and it feels almost like a trick of the imagination that it is only four years since they were ranked 133rd in the world. Knocking-out England they got themselves onto the quarter-finals losing to the finalist France.

First-time in the World Cup, a team made out of 334,252 inhabitants (the smallest country by population ever to qualify) will fight hard to shock the football world once again. Will you place your scores in their favor?

First game: Iceland vs Argentina (16/06)

Star: GYLFI SIGURÐSSON
Iceland’s talismanic midfield playmaker has been named his country’s footballer of the year for the last five years running. Sigurdsson supplied four goals and as many assists in the team’s Russia 2018 qualifying campaign. This season dressing the Everton jersey he made 24 appearances scoring 4 goals in the Premier

Coach: Heimir Hallgrímsson

A former dentist who previously served as joint-head coach with Lars Lagerback, Hallgrimsson has overseen Iceland’s remarkable rise. Having led the team with Lagerback at UEFA EURO 2016, he was in sole charge as they reached a first World Cup. This guy has the perfect curriculum to surprise everyone, any football achievement whatsoever.

Group: Argentina, Nigeria and Croatia

Australia – The Socceroos

By on May 5, 2018 in World cup teams

Australia… The Socceroos are making it to the World Cup for the 5th time. Their best performance on a World Cup was reaching the Round of 16 but they hope a tournament on the other side of the hemisphere may play in their favor.

The Australians played 22 games in qualifying, including an Asian playoff against Syria and culminating with a playoff win over Honduras. That made them the next-to-last team to clinch a spot at the World Cup 2108 edition.

The nucleus of the young squad that went to Brazil four years ago has remained, helping the country win its first Asian Cup title in 2015 and develop an attacking style it touts as the Australian way.

First game: Australia vs France (16/06).

Star: Even though Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield) and Mathew Ryan (Brighton) are the only ones playing at a top-flight European competition, the spotlight is headed to Tim Cahil. The evergreen Australian forward is seemingly getting better with age, having netted 11 goals on the road to Russia, including several trademark headers. Scorer of one of the most spectacular goals of Brazil 2014, Cahill could become one of the few players to score at four World Cups.

Coach: Bert van Marwijk was appointed Australia coach in January, having assumed the reins from Ange Postecoglou who resigned after the Socceroos qualified in November 2017. The 65-year-old Van Marwijk has significant experience, most notably leading his native Netherlands to the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final. He also helped Saudi Arabia reach Russia 2018 ending their 12-year World Cup drought.
